Fresh out of Coltrane’s quartet, Elvin Jones hit the studio in ’68 and Puttin’ It Together shows exactly why he was one of the greatest to ever sit behind a kit. Backed by Joe Farrell and Jimmy Garrison, it’s a stripped trio session but it swings like ten men. Elvin’s drumming is thunder and finesse rolled into one - constantly shifting, constantly alive. It’s fiery, loose, and deeply groovy, with that post Coltrane energy still burning through every take.
FFO: John Coltrane, Tony Williams, McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey
