2025 press.
Recorded in the mid 60s but shelved until the mid 70s, this is McLean at his adventurous best, somewhere between the bluesy hard bop he came up on and the freer, more angular stuff he was pushing into. The band is stacked too with Lee Morgan on trumpet, Charles Tolliver, Jack DeJohnette, Larry Willis and Larry Ridley bringing that muscular yet searching energy. Five long cuts where the solos breathe and the swing never drops. One for when you want Blue Note heat with a bit of grit under the fingernails.
FFO: Lee Morgan, Andrew Hill, Grachan Moncur III, Wayne Shorter
