Jay Watson’s been doing the Gum thing for years now, following whatever idea pops into his head. This time though it’s focused. Seven albums in and he’s locked into a proper mood across nine tracks. Blue Gum Way leans widescreen and a bit jazz touched, more space, more patience, less sugar rush psych. You can hear the influence of Talk Talk and the mood of A Moon Shaped Pool in the way it breathes and unfolds. It’s still melodic, still him, but clearer. Feels like someone who knows exactly what he wants to say and doesn’t need to shout it.
