Dolphy’s debut as a leader and it already sounds like he’s blowing the walls off the place. Outward Bound is bop turned inside out, angular and restless, full of sideways notes that shouldn’t work but do. There’s still swing here but it’s twitchy and wild eyed, exactly how Dolphy liked it.
