With each song named after an individual that may or may not have ever existed, Ed Hall's third album – and first for Trance Syndicate – carries on much in the tradition of its two predecessors: open, loose backbeats overlaid with pop song structures, and plenty of Butthole Surfers-esque acid-damage. While it's clear that Gary Chester is a remarkable guitar player, his Fripp-like style does not fully establish itself until the next album, Motherscratcher. In fact, Ed Hall still seems too bent on whimsy and weirdness to fully authenticate and distill its sound on this record. Although there are a number of well-crafted songs on Gloryhole, particularly the dreamy instrumental "Bernie Sticky", the band is uncertain of whether or not it wants to be a rock band, or simply reside in the Butthole Surfers farm league. Motherscratcher, the band's follow-up, indicated quite strongly that the band was more than prepared – and equipped – to become at least as good as the band it roughly mimicked for the first five or so years of its existence.
