By 1985 The Cure had already been through post punk, goth gloom and lush atmospheric pop, but this album pulled all those threads into something sharper and more immediate. Every track feels like a single, from the chiming pop of In Between Days to the swirling intensity of Push and the cinematic sweep of Close to Me. It is one of those perfect gateway records that works whether you are deep into their back catalogue or just starting to explore. This UK pressing is a nice find for anyone building a Cure section that actually makes sense. FFO: Echo and the Bunnymen, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cocteau Twins, New Order

Gloomy but catchy, weird but radio-ready. The moment they realised they could be a pop band and stay miserable. Hooks everywhere, but still enough eyeliner energy to keep it Cure. If you’re only in it for the sad hits, start here.
