Before they turned into the band your uncle insists on seeing at Custom House Square every summer, UB40 were a proper politically charged reggae outfit. Signing Off was their debut and it’s still their best: smoky grooves, sharp lyrics about Thatcher’s Britain, and a DIY spirit that feels way closer to punk than karaoke-night covers. It even came in a facsimile of a dole office form, which is about as on-the-nose as you can get. Play it loud enough and you’ll swear the PSNI are about to knock your door for being a bit too subversive. FFO: The Clash if they swapped guitars for melodica, Steel Pulse on student loan anxiety, Aswad with a chip on their shoulder, and that mate who insists every pint is “daylight robbery.”
