Europe first press 1979. Record plays EX. Sleeve has a small amount of art lost in the gatefold.
Zappa kicking off his most ridiculous rock opera, about a kid in a garage band, censorship, dystopian futures and, obviously, a talking appliance or two. Musically it swings from doo-wop pastiche to prog freak-outs to guitar heroics, all tied together with Frank’s usual mix of satire and smut. Only Zappa could make a record this ambitious and still fill it with knob jokes. FFO: Captain Beefheart with fewer brakes, prog theatre that doesn’t take itself seriously, concept albums that go fully off the rails.
