A beautifully unadorned slice of Irish folk in its purest form. Many’s The Foolish Youth brings together three stalwarts of the Irish singing tradition — Cullen, McPhail and Callery (famously of The Voice Squad) — for a set of close-harmony ballads, laments and timeless story-songs. No studio gloss, just three voices weaving through age-old tales of love, loss and hard-won wisdom. Deeply rooted, hauntingly beautiful, and a must for anyone with a soft spot for unaccompanied song. FFO: The Voice Squad, Planxty (unplugged moments), The Dubliners (ballads), Martin Carthy
