1987 and Zevon comes roaring back after rehab with his sharpest, nastiest wit intact. Backed by most of R.E.M. plus cameos from Dylan, Neil Young and Flea, it’s a who’s who of cool guest spots but still very much a Zevon record: biting, funny, dark, and way too clever for its own good. Title track kicks like a mule, and Boom Boom Mancini might be the best boxing song ever written. FFO: Randy Newman on a bender, Springsteen’s cynical cousin, and rock ’n’ roll with teeth still bared.
