Which artists could really be said to have influenced David Bowie? Sure, he picked up sparks from Little Richard, Elvis, Jacques Brel, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Scott Walker, John Lennon - even Brecht and Berlin cabaret. He admired writers like Reed and Walker for their fearlessness, their ability to turn songs into theatre. But the thing with Bowie is that influence never landed as copy. He absorbed, mutated and spat it back out as something unrecognisable. FFO: Lou Reed, Scott Walker, Roxy Music
