Makaya McCraven’s Off the Record is another masterclass in rhythm, texture, and pure feel. The Chicago drummer producer takes live jazz recordings and rebuilds them like hip hop beats - chopped, looped, re-layered until they hit somewhere between cosmic jazz and broken beat. It’s heady but never academic, full of groove and space, like Dilla met Pharoah Sanders in a smoky basement. Every track breathes and mutates, always in motion, always just out of reach.
