A true township classic, Idolar is the sound of early-2000s South African kwaito at its most raw and infectious. Born out of the street corners and dance battles of Tembisa, Moskito started as a pantsula crew before morphing into a full-blown musical force — fusing township rhythms, streetwise swagger, and influences from Trompies to 2Pac.
Recorded with minimal resources but maximum energy, Idolar went gold on its original release, powered by DIY determination, Percy Mudau’s studio magic, and production guidance from kwaito veteran Thami Mdluli (aka Professor Rhythm). There’s a grit and charm to this record that captures a moment in time when the streets shaped the sound — joyful, bass-heavy, and deeply local.
